Dr. Tirthankar Ghosal is a Staff Scientist in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), U.S. Department of Energy, where he serves as project lead of Agentic Software within the Quantum Science Center. He also leads AI for Laboratory Operations research at ORNL, focusing on deploying AI solutions to enhance operational safety and scientific workflows.
Dr. Ghosal’s portfolio includes substantial collaborations with leading institutions such as AI2, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), MIT, Stanford, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), NASA, Harvard, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). His work has been recognized through awards at NeurIPS 2025 and allocations, such as the DOE NESAP for Doudna Tier 2, which supports projects like AstroMLab.
His current investigations include impactful AI for Science projects, including initiatives in Astro/MatSci foundation model training, scientific hypothesis generation, and engineering diagram parsing. Dr. Ghosal holds key organizational roles, serving as the Diversity & Inclusion Chair for several ACL conferences and organizing workshop series, including SDP, WASP, and AutoMin. He is also a member of the program committee and an area chair for major AI conferences, including AAAI, ICLR, NeurIPS, NAACL, EMNLP, and ACL.
In addition to his research responsibilities, Dr. Ghosal is an affiliate faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he teaches Generative AI to Ph.D. students. He is committed to mentoring and actively supports diversity and community engagement at ORNL and the broader NLP/AI community.
